A River of Chocolate

Part II of cooking class involved all sweet treats, a little bit of magic and some balloons.

Class started with their safety instructions and demonstrations for their first two items.  We spit them into two groups and when they completed one they sat and then switched to the second.

Round One:

Banana Pudding Cups with Umbrella
Peanut Butter Smiles

I loved watching their eyes get big when they saw each treat.

Round Two:
Cookies with Chocolate Frosting and Sprinkles
Chocolate Cupcakes with Chocolate Frosting and Sprinkles

Round Three:
Honey Coated Bananas with Granola
Chocolate Dipped Marshmallows coated with Chocolate Cereal

Round Four:

No Bake Cookies

After all the treats were made they had a little class on what to do at a party.  The each took a plate and one of each item.  If there were leftovers at the end they could have seconds.  They were so stuffed the only thing they took away were little  cups of chocolate sauce that they said they were going to share...

After they got their treats they watched how to make balloon animals.

And they even got to see a few magic tricks!

Thank you again to our volunteers and our kitchen and Housemother helpers.

Pizza Party

In the Star Store a few weeks ago the kids were able to purchase cooking classes.  We offered two:
1. Pizza and Cookies
2. Sweet Treats (Kids called this Chocolate Day)

With their stars they bought a party with a limited guest list so they would each get a chance to personally make each item they would eat.

Day One of cooking will be covered in this post and the Sweet Treats will come later.

One of our volunteers from Session 5 has worked in the kitchen for most of her career and was so willing to share her talent.   Pizza was the most requested item before she cam so she figured a way to make pizza on the flat top in the Rising Star Dining Hall Kitchen.

The dough was prepared that morning and set to rest. Fresh vegetables were cut and separated so the kids could select their own personal toppings.

Upon entering the kids received a name badge with a color coded toothpick to make sure the pizzas weren't mixed up.  Each washed their hands and sat in the chairs and waited for the party to start.

They were given kitchen rules, safety tips and instructions on how to create the pizza.  Then it was their turn!

After the pizzas had sauce, cheese and toppings they washed their hands again and sat in their chairs for the next part.... no bake cookies!  Our awesome helpers went back into the kitchen and bakes all the pizzas while the kids worked on the cookies.

Each group of 3-5 kids had a recipe, ingredients and bowl to mix in.  Once they received their instructions they jumped to the tables.

Vijaya and A. Nagalakshmi were paired with Jeeva and Aravind.  They were great with helping them and letting them be involved in the cooking.

Once the cookies were mixed and rolled they got to present and sample one of the three types of cookies.

They saved the rest for AFTER pizza.

Pizza is done!

Nothing but smiles!

I think my favorite part of them making their own pizza was that even though they choose the toppings and made it themselves they STILL picked off the vegetables!  Kids!

When they were finished our volunteer had them sign her apron so she could share her experience with her kitchen team back home.

Thank you to great volunteers and great sponsors!

Stay tuned for the kids reaction to liquid chocolate.
Priceless!
